Senior Cycle

Consultation on the Introduction of 1:1 Laptops for Senior Cycle february 2025

As part of our commitment to enhancing learning and preparing students for the future, we are exploring the introduction of 1:1 laptops for Transition Year and Fifth Year students from September 2025. This initiative would replace printed textbooks with digital versions, supporting the updated Senior Cycle curriculum and ensuring students develop the essential skills required in higher education and the modern workplace.

Free Senior Cycle Textbooks will be rolled out from next September-this will extend to the digital textbooks on the device, i.e. there will be no extra cost to you for licences, etc.

Why Consider 1:1 devices?

Technology is playing an increasingly vital role in education, and the introduction of personal laptops would:

  • Support student engagement and independent learning.

  • Provide access to high-quality digital resources.

  • Enhance collaboration between students and teachers.

  • Develop key digital skills essential for further education and future careers.

  • Reduce reliance on traditional textbooks and offer more interactive learning experiences.

  • Ensure students are equipped for the digital requirements of the Senior Cycle and beyond.

Summary of Focus Group Discussion with TY Students

To ensure student voices are considered in this decision, we recently held a focus group discussion with Transition Year students. Their insights are invaluable in shaping this initiative.

General Reaction & Readiness

  • Students were generally open to the idea, recognizing the benefits of a laptop for coursework and study.

  • Some students expressed concerns about transitioning from traditional books to digital learning.

Benefits & Learning Impact

  • More efficient learning: Digital textbooks, research tools, and easy access to notes.

  • Better preparation for Senior Cycle & college/work: Increased familiarity with technology used in third-level education and workplaces.

  • Project work & assignments: Many new Senior Cycle subjects require more digital submissions, making a laptop essential.

  • Lighter school bags: Eliminating the need to carry multiple heavy textbooks.

Challenges & Concerns

  • Distraction management: School Wi-Fi restrictions will ensure laptops are used only for educational purposes.

  • Technical support: IT assistance will be available to help with software or device issues.

  • Screen time concerns: A balanced approach will be taken, ensuring laptops supplement traditional learning rather than replace it.

  • Affordability: The school will work to provide flexible payment options.

Practical Considerations

  • Ownership & warranty: Students will own their devices, covered by a two-year warranty for repairs.

  • Estimated cost: Approx. €600 per device, with payment plans available.

  • Daily use & charging: Students must bring their devices fully charged each day.

  • Classroom integration: Laptops will enhance learning but will not replace traditional teaching where unnecessary.

Consultation Process

We recognise that the introduction of 1:1 laptops is a significant step and requires careful consideration. To ensure all perspectives are heard, we are inviting parents, students, and staff to take part in a consultation process. This will include:

  • An online survey to gather feedback from parents and guardians.

  • Information session If we decide to implement this, where we will outline potential models, costs, and supports available.

  • Discussions with staff and students to assess the impact on learning and teaching.

  • Engagement with external experts to ensure we adopt best practices in digital learning.

Next Steps & Parental Feedback

  • Parents/Guardians are invited to provide feedback on the proposal by 4pm on Thursday, 6th February 2025 via THIS FORM (CLICK HERE TO PROCEED).

  • If the initiative proceeds, the school will engage with a supplier to provide more details on costs, warranty, and support.

Your input is essential in shaping this initiative. Please share your thoughts to help us make an informed decision that benefits all students. We are excited about this potential development and the opportunities it offers our students as they prepare for the future.

Transition Year is a time for participation in all subject areas – again this gives students the time to re-assess their aptitudes before facing the terribly important subject choices for Leaving Certificate. Due to the current Covid-19 School closure, students wishing to participate in TY should submit their application via an online application process.

Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme is compulsory for all Senior Cycle students.

Subject choices for the Leaving Certificate are made at the end of Transition Year (or Third Year for those students who do not opt for TY). Choices made at this stage are informed and well thought out. Subjects are timetabled only if there is sufficient demand. Subject choices are completed online through VSware. Parents and students will have the oppurtunity to attend our information night prior to subjects been chosen. Dates for the 2025 Information Night and submission deadlines will be posted here in due course. Parents will log in here and submit subject choices when these dates are finalised.
